MUMBAI: Tata Motors on Tuesday launched a new four-wheel, small passenger carrier, Magic Iris, and 600-kg smart micro truck, Ace Zip, priced at Rs 1.95 lakh and Rs 1.90 lakh (ex-showroom Thane, near Mumbai), respectively.

The company's Magic Iris is a 3-4-seater, small passenger carrier and is a better substitute for passenger-carrying three-wheelers.

"Magic Iris is a better alternative to auto rickshaws and other similar three-wheeler passenger carriers. This small passenger vehicle segment is doing well and we hope people accept this vehicle," Tata Motors President, Commercial (CVBU), Ravi Pisharody told reporters here.

The Iris is equipped with a 611-cc, water-cooled engine with 11 HP power. The vehicle comes with a warranty of one year, or 36,000 kilometres. It will be available in four colours, arctic white, ruby red, school yellow and jet black.

Tata Motors, the country's largest automaker by revenues, on Tuesday introduced the smallest vehicle from its commercial vehicle (CV) portfolio as it launched Magic Iris and Tata Ace Zip in the sub-one tonne category.

The company that opened the one tonne category in CVs in the country sees large demand for SCV (small commercial vehicle) category vehicles from the rural parts.

Commercial vehicles with less than one tonne payload qualify as SCVs.

To capture the rural demand, Tata Motors is running a pilot project in five states where it has tied up with different organisations in order to increase brand visibility of these products.

"We are currently looking at villages with not more than 55,000 populations. We are working with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), which runs rural empowerment programmes. We are also formalising a tie-up with IOC at village level to display our products at their stations. We are also in talks with e-chaupal," said Anil Kapur, head - sales and marketing - light commercial vehicle, Tata Motors.
